I'm Emma, aka The Helpful Puffin. I'm passionate about supporting three groups of people: those who are dyslexic, those who would describe themselves as visually impaired, and those whose first language isn't English. Together, we will overcome any struggles you have so you can be confident in your writing.
I love grammar. I got 97% on a grammar exam at university. (Why not 100%? There was a question worth 3 marks and I thought it was a trick question so I was trying to outsmart it. It was not a trick question.) I am that person who would go around correcting apostrophes on shop signs if it was socially acceptable. (Hence why I’m making a career out of it instead.) But more than that, I'm a detail-oriented person. I love making sure that everything checks out, that there's no room for error, that what you've produced is of the highest quality. Nothing breaks my heart more than seeing someone pursue their passions without having any of the content checked for accuracy. You only get one chance to make a first impression, so get it right first time. This is what drives me to make your written work the best that it can be.
I have a Masters degree and a first class BA (Hons) in English Language. I also have a "Proofreading Level 1" certificate from the Chartered Institute of Editors and Proofreaders (CIEP). I hold an entry level membership with the CIEP.
Make that solid first impression by having your work proofread for any errors first.
Proofreading is the final check before you get your work printed, published, submitted – wherever it needs to go. By asking me to proofread, you’re telling me that you’re happy with the content and you’re not looking to have anything major edited.
Copy editing, by contrast, is more in depth, and in fact it may not even be necessary depending on what it is you’re writing. (A promo flyer or a menu for your cafe most likely just needs proofreading.) By asking me to copy edit, you’re telling me that you’re not quite sure about some aspects of your work and you want some suggestions for improvement.
